Bravest Open With Big Win
The FDNY Football Team opened their 2008 National Public Safety
Football League season with a huge victory over their cross-country counterparts.
The Bravest beat the Los Angeles Fire Department "Heat" 45
- 0 in a mostly one-sided game. Saturday, April 19th, was a beautiful
day, especially for football, at Staten Island's New Dorp High School.
The Bravests' first drive was stopped just short of a touchdown when a Ryan Davan pass was picked off in the endzone. But the Bravest came back down the field shortly thereafter, mostly from a Joe Metreess to Lucas Niskanen 45 yard pass. George Oostmayer booted a 27 yard field goal to put the FDNY up 3 - 0 early in the first quarter.
Ryan Davan redeemed himself the next series with a 40 yard pass to Niskanen and then diving in for the toucdown himself. Oostmeyer converted to make the score 10 - 0 Bravest.
Metress added another score in the 2nd quarter when he hit Brian Vomero for a 46 yard touchdown with Oostmeyer remaining automatic. FDNY 17, LAFD Heat 0. The Bravest finished up their first half scoring with a Davan to John Carlson to Niskanen bomb to make it 24 - 0 after another Oostmeyer conversion. The half ended there...but the scoring didn't.
Carlson next received his own touchdown from Davan 38 yards down field and another Oostmeyer conversion to make it 31 - 0. First year player Tom O'Reilly ran one in from 40 yards, and Rob Gnerre intercepted a Heat pass on the LA 33 and didn't stop until he hit paydirt. Oostmeyer didn't miss all day...end result FDNY Bravest 45, LAFD Heat 0.
Kudos to the Bravest Defense and the Offensive line. There was pressure on LA all day and the Bravest quarterbacks had time to do what they had to do. Good job boys.
The Bravest next take their show on the road visiting the Tampa Bay Sentinels in Dunedin, Florida on Saturday, May 3rd.
Bravest Beat Mariners
The Bravest finished up their pre-season schedule by beating the Brooklyn Mariners 21-14 in a fundraiser for the Danny Suhr Scholarship Fund. Danny was definitley looking down on us when the skies turned blue and everyone had a great day.
The scoring was Bravest early with Brian Vomero being Ryan Davan's favorite target. Davan ran the first one in during the 1st quarter after a long pass to Vomero. The second touchdown was a 1 yard pass to Vomero in the second quarter. There was still no scoring by the Mariners at this point. Then a 81 yard strike from Davan to Vomero capped the scoring for the Bravest, but the Mariners were just waking up.
The Mariners put two touchdowns on the board late in the game, and looked like they might tie it up late in the 4th quarter. But, the Bravest defense came through like they always do and sealed the victory.
The Bravest open up their NPSFL season on Saturday, April 19th against the Los Angeles Fire Department. That game will kick off at 1:00 pm at New Dorp High School in Staten Island. Come on out and cheer your Bravest to victory.

Bravest
Unbeaten in Flag Tournament
Two out of two years the Bravest Football Club has made it to the Championship game of the Local 2000 Flag Football Tournament, and two years in a row they have faced the Camden City Fire Department, and two years in a row Camden has not been able to beat the FDNY.
The BFC finished up Saturday 2-0 beating Potomac Valley, and Baltimore City, giving the Bravest the # 4 Seed. FDNY faced Frederick County to open the day, then Potomac Valley once again, neither game was easy, but the Bravest came out on top in both. That set up a semi-final game against the US Army Ft Dettrick, who was the # 1 seed. The Bravest were able to keep them at bay winning the game to set up a re-match of the previous years championship.
Camden changed up quareterbacks from last year, going with a speed game, but the FD defense was able to hold them to only one score. Joe Metress and Ryan Davan switched places for the day, with Davan catching more than one toucdown and picking up a couple 4th down conversions. The Bravest defense was led by Matt Quinn, who had several picks and hardly missed a flag.
